Wix
April 10th, 2008 by bri
Over the past few days I’ve been looking into Wix. It basically enables you to create a fully-fledged msi package, with or without a user interface. You simply describe what you need using an xml file - then go through a compiling and linking procedure to create the msi file.
Great stuff - I like the fact that it is free, seemingly open source (strange for a Microsoft offering!) and the potential ability to hook this into your automated build process is a real bonus. Imagine - when rolling your product out to a live server, it could simply be a case of running a CruiseControl build that creates the msi for you… easy life!
Oh I forgot to mention - there is a tutorial - although it doesn’t seem to be up to date with respect to the latest version of the Wix toolset.
